Beijing opens SARS media center

The media center for Beijing's joint SARS prevention team is up and running. All its staff have moved into the capital's International Hotel, where there are no other guests at the moment.

The center has recruited two medical experts, one of whom is from the WHO's Beijing Office. Staff at the center say their role is to ensure the media have access to official and authentic information.

The expert from the WHO's Beijing Office will also help the center lift its game to provide the timely information the overseas media want. He is also responsible for coordination between the municipal government and the WHO's Beijing Office.

Center director Wang Hui says the group will organise the weekly press conferences held by the municipality. She says one of the center's main jobs is to help reporters with their interviews.

Wang Hui said, "Now, it's even more important than ever to strengthen prevention and monitoring because schools will resume classes soon and migrant workers will be coming back to the city. We will try our best even though the work to be done is still difficult."

Wang says there will be staff on duty around the clock to answer the phones. The center is also planning to take reporters to see some quarantined public areas.
