China stands ready to work with other countries to play an active role in fighting global diseases. That's the message China's Health Minister, Wu Yi, has delivered to the World Health Assembly meeting in Geneva.

Wu Yi says the issue of public health knows no national boundaries, and the World Health Organization should play a more important role in global health issues.

She says SARS is a new epidemic that isn't fully understood and, in the beginning, the Chinese government didn't realize how serious it was. China's public health system still has some hurdles to overcome and all these factors were combined to put the country's prevention and treatment of SARS in an awkward position.

But, Wu Yi says, the Chinese government soon realized the challenge and acted decisively. She maintains that public health and security is always a top government priority. The situation is still severe in China and the Chinese government will not treat SARS lightly.

Chinese Vice Minister of Health Ma Xiaowei has also addressed the assembly, briefing the members on China's work to combat the disease. He says the disease's peak in China's Guangdong Province, the capital Beijing and several other provinces has passed, and 43 percent of China's SARS patients have been discharged from hospital.
