Beijing has "effectively contained" the spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in its education sector, a municipal anti-SARS official said in Beijing Tuesday.

Zhu Shanlu, deputy team leader of Beijing's joint anti-SARS team said at a press conference that the students in Beijing have turned to the low-case group.

The full-time schools reported no clinically diagnosed SARS cases among students for 11 days, Zhu said.

Beijing has 2.8 million students in school. As of 10:00 am, May 19, the city reported 391 SARS cases among the students and teachers, another 38 students and teachers had been discharged from hospitals upon recovery and 16 died, Zhu said.

The mobility rate among students is 0.006 percent, Zhu said, noting the teachers and students have now a "stable state of mind" and the order of the schools is going back to normal.

The municipal government will not loosen guard in case of the rebound of the disease, Zhu said.
