The first trade fair featuring science and technology achievements across the Taiwan Strait, has opened in Fuzhou, capital of east China's Fujian Province. To ward off fears over the SARS disease, organizers adopted stringent measures to combat a possible outbreak.

Nearly 10,000 people from China and overseas attended this morning's (Sunday) opening ceremony of the five-day trade fair. The fair is designed to encourage overseas investment in sci-tech projects in Fuzhou and develop close business ties between Taiwan and the mainland.

In addition to over 500 enterprises from the mainland and Taiwan, dozens of multinational companies are also participating in the fair.

At the end of the first day of the trade fair, Fuzhou had 73 projects signed with a contracted investment of 600 million US dollars. Twenty-one of them are large-scale projects with an investment exceeding 10 million US dollars.

The event was jointly sponsored by the Fujian provincial government and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. Although there have been no SARS cases discovered in Fujian, the organizers still adopted strict preventive measures. Major activities at the fair are being held outdoors and trade fair venues are disinfected several times a day.
