Vice Premier Huang Ju has stressed that while great efforts are being made to fight the SARS epidemic, economic development should also be strengthened to continue advances on both fronts. He highlighted the point during an inspection tour of Chongqing, the country's youngest municipality.

The vice premier noted the situation across the country was still serious and he urged local governments to pay particular attention to SARS prevention among its large number of rural migrant workers. The reforms in Chongqing's state-owned enterprises were also of particular concern to the vice premier, who urged the SOEs to become more competitive in international markets.

In a separate inspection tour of central Henan Province, senior CPC official Luo Gan urged the province to strive to achieve the objectives of economic and social development for this year while sparing no efforts to fight SARS. Luo Gan, the Standing Committee member of the CPC Central Committee's politburo in charge of law enforcement, stressed the need for social stability at this critical period of time and warned of severe punishment for those who spread SARS-related rumors and false information.
