Beijing to continue strengthening cooperation with WHO: acting mayor
   CCTV.COM   2003-05-16 10:05:51
Beijing will continue to strengthen cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), said Acting Mayor Wang Qishan in Beijing Thursday when meeting with Henk Bekedam, WHO representative in China.

Wang said improving the ability to confirm cases is one of the main tasks of Beijing's current anti-SARS mission. Beijing has invited a group of experts from home and abroad to improve the diagnosis level.

He said to strengthen epidemiological research is the most effective way to cut off the infection channels of SARS. Beijing is now drawing up scientific methods to train more epidemiological research staff to intensify the job, and Wang said he hoped to introduce more advanced experience from other countries by close cooperation with the WHO.

Bekedam said he was glad to see new SARS patients are declining and the infection rates of medical staff are reducing sharply in Beijing. He said the WHO recently gained SARS-related statistics and analyses from local authorities in Beijing, noting that they have very good cooperation.

Bekedam said he hoped to provide help to Beijing by offering deeper analysis of these statistics.
