The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) prevention and cure work in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region features local characteristics, said experts with the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) in Nanning Thursday.

A joint working group had examined local disease prevention and control centers and special hospitals for SARS treatment, said C.K.Lee, head of a WHO expert team, at a press conference.

Besides lengthy talks with medical staff, the working group also paid visits to rural areas, he said.

Despite large numbers of locals working in Guangdong Province, only 20 SARS cases have been reported in Guangxi, according to sources.

Yang Qing with the Ministry of Health said that as early as last February, when SARS was spreading in Guangdong, Guangxi launched efficient networks immediately to respond.

Related organizations and people took responsibility to report disease information and emergency medical aid systems had been built up, he said.

Local officials registered people returning to their hometowns and measured body temperature, he said.

Lee expressed gratitude for the assistance offered by Guangxi.
