Officials from National Bureau of Statistics of China maintain that the impacts of SARS on the economy remain temporary, and only parts of the economy are suffering losses. China's economy is expected to continue steady growth.
An official from the National Bureau of Statistics of China says the service sector has suffered most heavily as a result of SARS, but that it accounts for small part of the national economy.
"Some industries, such as tourism, transportation, civil aviation and retailing have suffered some losses, but the negative impacts will be alleviated when SARS comes under control," said Xu Xianchun, department head of National Accounts, NBS.
He said that the impetus for economic growth comes mainly from the manufacturing sector. In recent months China has seen great increases in many industries, including medicine, textiles, autos and telecommunications.
In areas minimally affected by SARS, most industries retain stable growth. One such area, the Yangtze River Delta, accounts for one fifth of China's total GDP.
The official said that the State Council had adopted measures to invest in hygiene facilities in both urban and the vast rural areas, which will increase domestic consumption and boost the economy.
To date the Chinese government has allocated 5 billion yuan, or about 600 million US dollars, to scientific research and medical treatment specifically aimed at combating SARS.
