China is investing more money in anti-SARS measures. The National Development and Reform Committee has decided to readjust the investment orientation of government loans, to speed up the country's medical infrastructure to battle SARS. The central government will invest another one million US dollars to help prevent SARS from spreading toward rural areas.

The special fund will be used to support those areas that have been seriously impacted by SARS. Aims will include the construction, or reconstruction, of SARS-designated hospitals, fever clinics and quarantine rooms. The fund will also be used to purchase much-needed medical apparatus and special vehicles.

The State Council has instructed all local governments in SARS-hit areas to make good use of the special fund to meet pressing needs. The central government is aiming to create a disease prevention and control network this year. Meanwhile, a plan to set up medical institutions designated for emergency cases is also being developed. So far, a special fund of 15.5 billion yuan, or nearly 2 billion US dollars, has already been invested in the infrastructure of the nation-wide SARS prevention program.
