Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan has presided over a meeting on accelerating the construction of infrastructure used for prevention and treatment of SARS in rural areas. The State Development and Reform Commission decided to use the issue of treasury bonds to channel more funds into the fight against the epidemic.

The Chinese government announced on Sunday the allocation of an additional 812.6 million yuan, or 98.3 million US dollars to improve infrastructure and the capacity of medical institutes in rural areas. The fund was on top of another 1.55-billion-yuan special appropriation for construction of the nation-wide disease prevention network.

The 800 million yuan will mainly be used for restructuring hospitals dedicated to SARS treatment, fever clinics and quarantine wards, and purchasing desperately needed medical equipment and vehicles. At the same time, the fund will also be used to build disposal facilities for hazardous medical waste and sewage.

In Beijing's suburbs, travellers who enter villages have to sterilize their vehicles and check body temperatures. Those whose temperatures are higher than 37 degrees Celsius will be sent to the local fever clinic for a complete checkup. In the villages, special sanitary staff sterilize the houses twice a day. All animals and pets have also been forbidden to go on to the streets for fear of spreading the virus.
