In the town of Xiaotangshan, where the first, and China's largest, SARS-designated hospital has been built, local residents are going about their daily lives as usual.

Residents living in the areas surrounding Xiaotangshan hospital, where a large number of SARS patients are receiving treatment, are very concerned about whether the close proximity of the hospital would have a negative impact on their daily life.

Lu Quan, the vice secretary general of the Beijing Municipal Government assured the inhabitants of the area that it is safe to live close to the hospital as strict measures had been taken to prevent the virus and pollutants from spreading.

"The issue of pollution was taken into account when the hospital was designed and built. We have four burners, with a capacity of eight tons each, to get rid of the waste and hazardous substances," said Lu Quan, vice secretary general of Beijing Municipal Government.

Rong Chaoying, Party secretary of Xiaotangshan, said sewage disposal at the hospital goes through a series of stringent procedures before the waste water enters the sewage treatment plant in the town. Due to the measures put in place by the hospital and the local government, the nearby residents feel secure in carrying on their regular way of life.
