In a joint effort to fight SARS, medical experts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have shared their experiences during a video-conference.

This videoconference is part of the latest in a series of efforts by medical authorities on both sides of the Taiwan Straits to combat the deadly disease.

Using the latest communications technology, the three-hour seminar brought together two dozen medical experts from Beijing, Guangzhou and Taipei.

Zhong Nanshan, a renowned physician from Guangdong Province, said that outbreaks of SARS may subside after more people are exposed to the virus and develop antibodies.

Doctors noted that many medical staff who have cared for patients for weeks have not contracted the illness, while those coming from other areas to lend their support have been infected.

They said the conference was very helpful in getting the latest information on the progress of SARS treatment and hoped for similar exchanges in the future.

Dr. Kao Ming-Chien, president of Taiwan Medical Alliance Association, said, "I hope we will have a second video conference with the mainland, because the SARS virus changes very quickly, or transforms to another new strain. So we should share our medical experiences with each other."

The situation has worsened in Taiwan with 18 new cases reported Friday, the largest one-day increase since the outbreak began on the island province.

So far, 14 people there have been killed and 149 have been infected with the disease.
