SARS has forced Beijing's entertainment industry to a grinding halt. Blinds are firmly down at most cinemas in the capital. But at China's only drive-in movie theater, in Beijing's suburbs, business is booming. In fact, the open-air cinema has never seen so many visitors.
This drive-in is the only movie theater of its kind in China. Until recently, the general public wasn't familiar with the concept and visitors only trickled in. But it has gradually come to the attention of the recreationally thirsty
"I was curious about watching a movie in a car - it's cool," said a movie goer.
"We are having a good one third more cars coming nowadays, because our theater is situated in a large open area with flowing air and trees around," said a theater owner.
With fears about SARS gripping the city, Beijingers are eager to flee confined spaces. It's no wonder the drive-in theater, with its spacious venue and natural ventilation, has suddenly become so popular.
