SARS is spreading not only through China but around the globe, posing a public health threat to human beings. As the world integrates socially and economically, the impact of SARS has been able to cross borders and the problem has become more complex.

It has already been a long and drawn-out fight against the fatal disease. SARS has jolted the international community and puzzled medical experts.

"Crisis is characterized with uncertainty: its development cannot be predicted. Second is the urgency, the crisis develops very, very fast. The current atypical pneumonia is a very typical crisis," said Xue Lan, professor of Development Research Academy of Tsinghua University.

However, unlike the plague and many other epidemics in human history, the SARS virus is spreading at a surprisingly fast speed. It has surfaced in 30 countries and regions, becoming a common enemy around the global.

Group travel and jet aircraft -- SARS germs have turned some of the catalysts of globalization into sinister weapons.

"Under the backdrop of globalization, any regional crisis and any national crisis can develop into a global crisis, like the 1998 Asian financial turmoil. Therefore, every country must fully co-operate with each other to confront the threat. This time, the Chinese government has worked together with the World Health Organization and many international research institutes also developed close co-operation, finally finding the coronavirus as the cause of SARS. This fully demonstrated that in modern society, global co-operation is most needed," said Xue Lan.

Though the source has not yet been found, transparent information can certainly minimize the spread of the virus. And the efforts of the international community are in urgent need as we combat the disaster together.
