Much-needed medical equipment has arrived in Beijing from Japan and Germany to help ease the burden on health-care facilities stretched thin by the SARS crisis.

The Japanese government donated protective equipment, testing apparatus and medicines. The aid is worth more than 200 million yen. The first batch of donations has already arrived and is being distributed to major SARS hospitals in Beijing to relieve the shortage of equipment, which is hampering the battle to contain the disease.

Also on Thursday, a batch of respirators and X-ray machines with a total value of 10 million euros arrived from Germany. Germany's Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation provided the funding for the equipment in response to a request from Beijing.

The machines are supplied by electronics giant Siemens and delivered by Lufthansa Cargo.
