Life in the time of SARS

The SARS outbreak means it's been a different kind of spring in Beijing this year. Instead of travelling during the May Day holiday or joining the legions of shoppers in crowded department stores, Beijingers are turning to quieter and safer alternatives to keep themselves occupied.

This bride and bridegroom-to-be in wedding attire have attracted attention in the park. Even though they've put off their wedding ceremony because of the outbreak, the couple say there's no need to be that scared of SARS.

The virus's presence is raising interest in personal health. In another corner of the park is a fitness center. The exercisers say health is the best medicine against the disease.

Most people are staying at home to avoid contracting the disease. Reading seems a good way to kill time. In large bookstores, texts on management and computer science are still popular, while those on SARS prevention are becoming best sellers.

Vacations at Beijing universities have been brought forward to limit infection, yet the desire to learn Chinese among expats continues.

At the Beijing Chemical University, four Chinese study groups have been opened for students at different levels.

An Australian student says the university is taking very strict measures to stop SARS virus emerging. She says she is happy to continue her study.

Her Finnish classmate says he hopes to be able to find a job in China when SARS is brought under control.

During vacation, schools will air classes on television and radio. Online class will also be available on the Internet.

The anti-SARS campaign is being carried on in a more rational and effective way. The people in Beijing seem to feel that success is drawing closer.
