The Chinese University of Hong Kong has confirmed the existence of at least three SARS-associated coronaviruses. Medical researchers from the university say these viruses may change their genetic makeup in two weeks during their rapid genome replication.
The researchers made the conclusion after studying the genome sequence of the coronavirus samples from 11 patients at the Hong Kong Prince of Wales Hospital.
Researchers also confirmed while the virus changed its genetic makeup, part of its original genetic code will be transferred. Scientists in the school have worked out ways to identify the newly developed virus.
The latest discovery will be helpful to develop accurate diagnostic tests and effective disease treatment.
