163 new confirmed SARS cases

    The Ministry of Health reports that in the 24-hour-period ending 10 am Sunday (May 4), 163 new SARS cases have been confirmed on the Chinese mainland. Ninety-four of these come from suspected cases.

    The cumulative number of SARS cases in the mainland has risen to 4,125. The Ministry says that, to date, a total of 1,416 SARS patients have fully recovered and been discharged from hospital, but 197 people altogether have died.

    In Beijing, 69 new cases were confirmed, 26 of them from already suspected cases.

    Excepting Beijing, the top three provinces reporting newly confirmed cases are the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region with 35 cases, Hebei with 19 cases and Shanxi 11 cases.

    Fujian Province has not reported any new cases for 26 days.
