   CCTV.COM   2003-05-04 10:05:01
A doctor from the Taiwan University Hospital has said the SARS death rate on the island may continue to rise. At the same time, Taipei residents have launched an all-out disinfection campaign ---- in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading in the communities.

Taiwan's outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome has abruptly worsened. The number of cases tripling in ten days and deaths jumping from three to eight in twenty four hours.

But messages from doctors fighting the virus are still more worrying.

Dr. Zhang Shangchun, working in Taiwan University Hospital, says "Considering the fact that two hospitals in Taiwan have suffered an explosion of SARS cases, the death rate in May is almost sure to surpass that in March."

Dr. Zhang suggests the best way to contain the epidemic at present is to avoid transferring patients between hospitals and reinforcing quarantine programs.

Recognizing the expanding outbreak, Taipei authorities have given a quart of bleach to every household in the city along with orders to disinfect all homes and businesses at least once a day.

The city's health department has warned journalists against interviewing SARS patients or those under quarantine without official permits.

The warning was issued after one TV reporter got a running high fever after visiting a suspected patient at home. All airports and ports in Taiwan have ordered passengers and crews to wear masks throughout the journey, saying anyone violating the decree will be seriously punished.
