Greater efforts should be made to prevent the spread of SARS into China's rural areas. Chinese vice premier Hui Liangyu made the remark during his recent trip to the rural areas of east China's Jiangxi province.

Hui Liangyu has been assessing the situation in the country's rural areas since Wednesday. He's urging local officials to take firm measures to prevent the spread of SARS in the countryside. The vice premier says the most urgent task is to prevent farmers who had gone to cities to work from returning to their homes. He's calling on the workers to stay where they are during the outbreak. At the same time, different localities and departments employing farmers as workers should do more to keep them at work in cities.

The vice premier says farmer workers with SARS should be treated free of charge, and those coming from SARS-affected cities should be closely monitored.

He wants local officials to restructure agriculture and do all they can to raise the farmers' incomes.

Hui Liangyu is also underlining the need to be well prepared for the forthcoming summer flood, prevent forest fires, as well as contain crop diseases and insect pests.
