On Friday, the Hong Kong Chinese University announced a major breakthrough in attempts to know more about SARS. The university's researchers have discovered that the virus' gene mutates very rapidly as SARS is transmitted from person to person. The discovery is the result of gene sequencing and evolution analysis of the coronavirus samples of 11 patients at Hong Kong's Prince of Wales Hospital.
The research also indicates that, in March, Hong Kong had several kinds of coronaviruses circulating with subtle differences. Some resulted from cross-infection between different hospitals, some came from outside sources. The university is hoping to gradually track down the root of the SARS virus.
On another front, labor unions and community groups in Hong Kong are organizing a massive campaign against SARS in a show of respect and support for the region's medical workers. The campaign gets under way on Sunday and will continue until July 1. It will include mass health and fitness activities, an all-Hong Kong football match, and donation drives for medical workers.
Organizers of the campaign are also encouraging people in Hong Kong to resume their normal lives, increase consumption to boost the economy, and unite for the final victory against SARS.
