While the SARS epidemic does not appear to be leaving us any time soon, more and more people are learning to live with it and go about their daily life as much as possible.

Early in the morning, big clean-ups were carried out at public facilities in major Chinese cities to welcome shoppers and families on holiday outings.

In cities like Kunming, Fuzhou and Taiyuan, shopping malls and restaurants have been thoroughly disinfected to give residents some peace of mind in the midst the SARS epidemic.

In Qingdao, in east China's Shandong Province, most citizens have had to stay put after the cancellation of week-long holidays due to the SARS scare. But SARS seems to have done little to dampen holiday spirits. In one neighborhood, residents are even holding a floral show and bird pageant.

A Qingdao resident said, "We like these kinds of entertainment as they take some of the stress away from people. It will also help create a sense of relaxation."

In places like Shijiazhuang, Changsha and Dalian, people are opting for short trips to parks and beaches where they go fishing, fly kites, climb mountains or simply enjoy the sunshine.

A Changsha resident said, "During the holidays, more outdoor activities and fresh air keep us fit both physically and mentally. With that, we are more confident of defeating SARS."

In Hong Kong, over 200 members of local youth organizations staged their own unusual performance art show -- a formation of the heart to show their solidarity with the May 4th Movement, a student patriotic movement in 1919, and to carry the spirit of those ideals to another level.
