Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has warned of the possibility of a relapse of SARS in Guangdong Province. This comes despite the remarkable achievements made in the initial period of the fight against the killer disease.

The premier has just come back from a special China-ASEAN meeting on SARS in Bangkok, where he called for closer coordination and cooperation between China and ASEAN members to fight the deadly disease.

During his inspection tour of Guangdong on Wednesday, Wen Jiabao first went to a middle school, where he was warmly welcome by thousands of students.

He was relieved to learn that no SARS cases had been spotted in the school and encouraged the young people to get more exercise to keep fit.

As the Labor Day holiday was approaching, the premier also went to a subway construction site to extend festival greetings to the workers there on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council.

The premier has taken the safety of the medical workers to heart and told them that the country will never forget the sacrifices they have made during this critical period when the people need them most.

He said, " The majority of the medical workers have made great contributions in the fight against SARS. I'd like to express my thanks to you for your unselfish behavior and sacrifices in dangerous moments."

After hearing SARS prevention reports from the provincial government, the premier urged the officials to fortify what they've already achieved in the campaign against SARS. The premier stressed that they must fully realize the urgency and complexity of the fight and try to minimize the negative impact of SARS on economic and social development.
