Chinese President Hu Jintao has warned local government and party officials in Tianjin to be aware of the complexity of SARS control and get ready for more difficult work ahead. So far, 61 cases have been confirmed in the coastal city, about 100 kilometers southeast of Beijing.

On Thursday's inspection tour of Tianjin municipality, Hu Jintao spoke to medical workers at the Disease Prevention Center about the progress they've made in controlling SARS. He expressed his gratitude, saying they carry the hope of the nation to win in the fight against SARS.

Hu Jintao said, "A battle against SARS is going on nationwide and there is huge task ahead. The government and people hold high expectations of you. We hope you will keep on working hard and protect yourselves well while working on the frontline to treat patients. With efforts from all of us, the final victory belongs to us and to the Chinese nation."

Hu Jintao said SARS control should focus on the early discovery and quarantine of suspected cases to cut off the sources of the disease. He highlighted the importance of scientific research for a vaccine and medical equipment to protect against infection.

Hu Jintao also visited a community for teachers to get first-hand information on anti-SARS measures, and a nearby supermarket to check on its stocks.

He said, "The government will guarantee a sufficient supply of commodities to our citizens. There's no need to worry about that. Prices will not go up and the quality will be ensured."

Hu Jintao also met with the Tianjin mayor and medical officials. He urged them to make prevention their priority, and coordinate concerted efforts by the whole community to eradicate the virus.
