Shanghai has not underreported its number of SARS cases, the World Health Organization announced in Beijing on Monday. The SARS reporting system in Shanghai is sound and there's no evidence that statistics have been covered up, health officials said. However they also expressed worries about the situation in Beijing.
The team of six experts found that the system for reporting cases was sound in Shanghai after a five-day visit in the city. But they also pointed out that the city could potentially be overwhelmed in the event the number of cases surge.
Health officials also said a meeting with Beijing authorities over the weekend helped them understand the current situation in Beijing. They urged for more communication of SARS with the public, such as providing information like where SARS outbreaks have occurred. They said they were also concerned about the increasing number of SARS cases over the last week.
WHO experts also said the floating population of Beijing could also increase the spread of SARS and measures should be taken to prevent the virus from spreading through travel.
The WHO officials also said they were quite concerned about the disease spreading to poorer regions in China and warned that China's health care system is badly underfunded and are not ready to deal with an epidemic disease like SARS.
