Preventative measures taken to curb spread of SARS

As the frontline medical workers go all-out to save SARS sufferers, local governments have also taken preventative measures to curb the spread of SARS. Tom Cliff takes us to Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai to see what measures are being taken in all sorts of passenger transportation.

In Beijing's Capital Airport, 25 infrared thermal imaging systems are available at the entrance of the waiting room to test the temperature of every boarding passenger. During peak hours, the waiting room is only available for passengers flying out on that day. High-speed thermal meters are also on hand as the passengers board the aircraft, and are able to read every passenger's temperature in one second. Revamped air conditioners make it possible to get more fresh air into the waiting room.

In Nanjing, the capital city in east China's Jiangsu Province, the local railway authority has assigned a medical specialist to each passenger train departing from Nanjing. Every day a doctor patrols the carriage a couple of times, checking on people's condition and helping each passenger fill in a Health Information Card. Once any suspected case is found, the doctor will isolate the possible sufferers immediately in a separate room.

In Shanghai, all buses, taxis and subway trains must be sterilized and labelled every day before starting off. Every local resident can help monitor compliance with the regulation, as each day is color-coded.
