China's Ministry of Health has issued an emergency circular on the prevention of cross-infections of the killer disease SARS in hospitals, for the safety of the medical workers. The circular calls for a higher alert from hospital authorities on the enhanced quarantine of SARS victims and better protective efforts for the medical staff.

In the circular, the Ministry of Health requires the hospitals at various levels across China to draw on their Guangdong and Beijing partners' experiences and lessons in SARS treatment.

It exhorts the hospital authorities to take a strict hand in quarantine, disinfection, and prevention measures to reduce the possibility of cross-infection.

The ministry also called for a practical implementation of the disinfection and quarantine measures it had already issued a short time ago. These require special clinics for those with symptoms, and isolated observation rooms for suspected SARS patients should be separated from other parts of the hospital, and well ventilated. Furthermore, these wards must be clearly sign-posted to prevent accidental entry by staff or patients.

The medical staff must be informed of any developments in recognising SARS symptoms to facilitate timely discovery of SARS patients.

The hospitals have a responsibility to their patients, if they diagnose the patient as suspected or confirmed SARS patients, they can't refuse treatment. Suspected patients and confirmed cases must be put into different wards. The SARS victims should be kept in strict isolation. No patient visits are allowed.
