Measures have been tightened across China to control the spread of the deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Individuals, hospitals, schools and other sites exposed to the virus have been ordered to be quarantined.
China's Ministry of Health has sent notices to hospitals across the country to improve the quality of medical services to ensure a drop in the death rate. Local governments are being asked to cremate the bodies of SARS victims who have succumbed to the disease. No memorial ceremonies are to be held. Special-purpose vehicles and cremation procedures are to be used and they are to be strictly disinfected. The Ministry of Education says that from Saturday on, all students in Beijing who have left school for home, will not be allowed to return to their schools until notified. School officials are also being urged to persuade students preparing their return to stay on campus. The universities infected with SARS are also to revise their teaching methods, and not hold large lectures. Any cases of SARS must be reported to the Ministry of Education as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, local governments have received emergency notices ordering them to take effective measures to ensure the supply of medicines and equipment for treating SARS. The notices also urge tighter supervision of the prices and quality of SARS-related medicines and other goods, and call for measures to ensure the stability of market prices.
