Chinese lawmakers on SARS control

    China's top lawmakers have given support to and confirmation of the government's work to combat the fatal flu-like disease --- SARS. They united in one voice at the closing of the bi-monthly session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee. They also endorsed Vice Premier Wu Yi to serve concurrently as health minister.

    The country's some 140 top lawmakers have put the stamp of approval on the government's efforts fighting against SARS. Wu Bangguo, the country's top legislator, called for all people to unite behind the government in this matter of life-and-death.

    Wu Bangguo said, "The SARS prevention and control situation is still critical. Now our common task is to have steely resolution and unite together to do our best in this regard. We should also give full support to the work of the State Council."

    He said all of society should be mobilized for the fight, and an efficient legal system should be set up.

    He added, "We should strengthen the promotion of the 'Epedemic Prevention Law' and the supervision of law enforcement. The experience of the battle against SARS will help us establish a more efficient working and monitoring and legal system in epidemic control."

    He also paid tribute to the medical staff in the forefront. In concluding, Wu Banguo voiced his firm confidence that China will win the final victory in this battle.

    Lawmakers also endorsed Vice Premier Wu Yi as health minister, replacing Zhang Wenkang, who voluntarily resigned. Wu Yi is one of the highest-ranking officials to be named to the post.
