Experts on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are calling for more cross-Straits medical cooperation to battle SARS. An agreement was reached at a two-day academic forum in Beijing on Wednesday and Thursday to step up cooperation from medical experts and organizations, especially on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. This was the first academic seminar to be held for participants from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao since the outbreak of SARS.

The discussion drew 56 representatives, including those from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, as well as experts from the World Health Organization. Medical staff and doctors from Beijing, Guangdong and Shanxi provinces, all involved in the fight against the disease, also attended the seminar.

The discussions focused on SARS findings thus far, as well as its treatment and prevention. Participants also discussed the cause of the disease, as well as the use of medicine to fight the disease.

The participants agreed that it was important to raise people's awareness of personal sanitation. They agreed the public should better know and understand how to prevent the spread of the disease, as well as the latest information on a cure. For now, the medical staff participants say they will all step up their efforts to develop a SARS vaccine.

Zong Shujie, vice chairperson of China Medical Association said: "If the cause of the disease can be found quickly, it will be helpful for the development of the vaccine. We can make an early examination if we can diagnose it."

Participants say more cooperation especially across the Taiwan Straits will be necessary to fight, and win, against the disease. As of Friday, there were 41 reported SARS cases in Taiwan.
