In Beijing, most city dwellers are able to buy various kinds of medicine and medical aids of good quality to help in the prevention and fight against SARS. Beijing's drug supervision authorities have also vowed to further tighten inspection and punishment efforts to ensure the continued quality of these drugs and instruments.

The open sale of the medicine and medical instruments against SARS began on April 9th in Beijing. Officials from the Beijing Drug Administration said on Friday that they have since carried out inspections on over 3,000 medical groups and enterprises, as well as on medical wholesalers and retailers.

Over 40 thousand unqualified masks have been discovered, and sealed up to meet quality standards. Non-licensed enterprises have also been closed down, and such products have been confiscated.

Zhang Wei, deputy director of Beijing Drug Administration said: "Now we can say that the general quality of the medicine and medical instruments for SARS prevention has been satisfactory. And the price of these products are relatively stable now."

Zhang also said that the drug authorities had also carried out quality control inspections on about 90 kinds of anti-cold drug. Nearly 99 percent of these drugs have passed inspections and have been determined of good quality.
