China's Ministry of Commerce has assured the public of continued food supplies into affected regions despite the spread of the deadly SARS virus.

Deputy Minister Zhang Zhigang and the newly-appointed Beijing's Acting Mayor, Wang Qishan, visited vegetable markets in downtown Beijing this afternoon. They say supplies into the capital will continue as usual. Everyday commodities such as rice, flour and vegetables are well stocked and will remain so.

Stores will bring a large supply of items thought to guard against the virus including face masks. The assurance comes as many shoppers in Beijing race to grocery stores, stocking up on food and other basic needs.
