Australian scientists to test effect of SARS in animals
   CCTV.COM   2003-04-24 10:04:58
Australian scientists plan to test the effect of SARS in animals, The Sydney Morning Herald reported Thursday.

They plan to import the SARS virus and infect chickens, pigs and cats with it, hoping to identify a relationship between animal diseases and SARS in human beings.

According to the report, the three species have been chosen because chickens had been implicated in the first cases of SARS in southern China, pigs were commonly the source of animal infections that spread to humans, and cats could suffer from feline infectious peritonitis, caused by a coronavirus, the same family of viruses as SARS.

The tests will be conducted by scientists of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory based in Geelong, Victoria, at the request of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Animal Health Organization.
