Beijing closes schools to stop spread of SARS

    Beijing has announced it's closing most schools in the city to prevent the spread of SARS. The move is designed to safeguard the health of students. More than 1 million primary and secondary school students will now be forced to stay at home with mid-term examinations and excursions now cancelled.

    In Beijing's Haidian District, schools were already deserted on Wednesday after the city ordered the closure of most school for two weeks.

    Officials said various measures will be taken to ensure home studies. Students with Internet access will receive lessons at home, and teachers will work to supervise their students.

    Li Lihong, director of teaching of Fangcaodi Primary School, said: "We prepared two-week's worth of homework for the students, which can give some direction for students' to study in the next two weeks."

    Boarding schools without SARS cases have been told to close their doors and keep students on campus.
