Secondary school students in Hong Kong are making their way back to classes after three weeks of closing by the health authorities in an effort to stem the spread of SARS.

As students made their way back to their classrooms on Tuesday, Hong Kong authorities reassured them that strict safety measures had been taken to keep their schools free of the SARS virus.

The new measures require that parents take their children's temperatures daily before sending them to school. Masks are also mandatory at all times while in school.

Some schools have made special adjustments to the curriculum and suspended certain activities to minimize chances of infection.

All primary schools will remain closed until at least next Monday. The decision to reopen primary schools is expected from the government on Thursday.

At the same time, the government has announced an aid plan to help SARS victims. Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee-hwa said, "The government has decided to go to the Financial Sub-committee of the Legislative Council and ask for $200 million to set up a fund for medical workers."

Tung said the purpose of the fund is to allow those who have been valiant in fighting the disease a chance to receive further training and studies.
