New Zealand is at risk of an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) but health authorities are taking the right steps to prevent the disease.
National Pandemic Planning Committee Chairman Christchurch virologist Lance Jennings told National Radio Tuesday that New Zealand's response had always been to plan for the long-term and travel advisories to affected countries.
Nurses have also been stationed at airports to provide advice and monitor incoming travelers.
"We are at risk of travelers entering New Zealand and introducing a SARS virus; what is important is that we have systems in place to try and identify these people at our borders in the first instance," Dr Jennings said.
There have been several SARS scares in New Zealand but so far no confirmed cases yet.
