Chinese President Hu Jintao has paid a visit to two research establishments in Beijing, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Military Medical Sciences. His visit came as researchers with the two institutions have recently developed a fast-track SARS diagnosis measure, as well as other promising scientific breakthroughs in SARS-related research.
President Hu Jintao on Sunday toured an epidemic microbe research institute under the Academy of Military Medical Sciences and Beijing Genome Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The Chinese president noted that scientific researching holds the key in the fight against the deadly virus. In meetings with researchers, he expressed his gratitude for what the researchers have done in fighting the SARS virus.
In the wake of SARS outbreak in China, leading scientists and researchers from the two institutes have been working around the clock in an attempt to find ways to contain and eradicate the deadly disease.
The Chinese researchers are among the world's first in pin-pointing a new coronavirus to the SARS disease. They have also completed the virus' DNA sequencing, paving the way for a possible vaccine.
After viewing first hand the researchers' work, Hu Jintao said he is also impressed by a newly developed fast-track diagnosis measure.
Later in discussions with scientists, he stressed they have been once again put at the forefront in a period of difficulty, and he encouraged them to continue their research into an effective treatment of SARS.
