To halt the spread of SARS, hundreds of thousands of Hong Kongers, from senior officials to restaurant workers, are rolling up their sleeves in an unprecedented city-wide cleanup campaign.

The two-day campaign targets both the public and private sectors such as schools, housing complexes, markets and restaurants. Priority sites for disinfection are garbage collection areas, clogged drains and alleyways.

The public has warmly welcomed this government-sponsored action and more than 30 thousand government employees, 40 thousand workers and over two hundred thousand families have joined in.

The government also hopes the cleanup campaign will help Hong Kong residents who have been affected by the recent SARS reports to create a more cohesive society where people are more understanding and more ready to help.

Hong Kong Health and Welfare Secretary Yoeh Eng-kiong said:"Today the whole objective is for us to work together in a community to clean up Hong Kong. But it's very important that to prevent the SARS... personal hygiene and environmental hygiene are two very key important objectives that we must achieve if we want to reduce the incidents of SARS in the territory. So today's activities are to encourage individuals of all walks of life to participate in this clean Hong Kong campaign and also to facilitate that these habits will continue in the future."

The government said the campaign is meant to launch an ongoing process that will urge residents to regularly clean their own homes and neighborhoods.

Several volunteer organizations are also involved in separate cleanup campaigns. Six thousand volunteers in Hong Kong's 18 districts are volunteering their time with the elderly in cleanup efforts. Organizers say they are encouraged by the efforts to create a more caring and unified Hong Kong.
