Latest statistics show that the number of SARS patients has been decreasing in Hong Kong in the past three days, a good sign for the region. But local health officials warn that vigilance is still needed to check the epidemic.

Friday became the first day in Hong Kong when the recovered SARS patients discharged from hospital outnumbered the incoming ones.

According to a statement jointly issued by the Department of Health and the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong, 30 new SARS patients were admitted to and 50 were discharged from hospitals in the region.

Since the outbreak of the SARS in March, 322 patients have recovered and been discharged in the region. Most of the patients currently in hospital are showing positive responses to the new treatment.

The Education Administrative Bureau has decided to resume classes for students higher than junior middle school. But the Health Department warns it will take 20 consecutive days of no new cases reported to show the success of the measures against SARS.
