As the May Day holiday approaches, travel agencies, hotels, bus and ship companies in China are taking preventive measures against SARS to ensure the health of tourists from home and abroad. Dispatched by the National Tourism Administration and the China Tourism Association, an inspection team started checking Beijing's tourism facilities on Friday.
At the capital's travel agencies, the inspectors were told in detail the measures being taken to prevent SARS. The travel agencies are providing SARS information pamphlets to customers, and disinfecting their office equipment.
Officials say staff in the tourism industry have been trained to deal with the epidemic to make sure tourists and themselves are safe.
Zhang Xiqin, vice director of the National Tourism Administration, said, "From travel agencies to hotels, transportation and scenic spots, the working staff have learned to deal with emergency SARS cases as soon as infection is detected."
Most of Beijing's hotels, restaurants, buses and taxis have also been disinfected and clearly marked.
In the hotels, cleaners wipe elevators, telephones, and chairs with disinfectant frequently. Taxi companies have provided drivers with white gloves and disinfectant tissues. Before the May Day holiday, sanitation inspections will be carried out around the country.
