With the outbreak of the SARS in many parts of China, the government is paying special attention to the control of the disease in schools, by nature densely populated. Educational activities are taking priority in schools of different levels across the country.

Directed by the Ministries of Education and Health, schools in SARS-affected areas have stepped up efforts to fight the highly infectious disease. Each day, areas of congregation are thoroughly cleaned. Classrooms, dorms, libraries, labs and dining-halls are disinfected three times a day. Students are also given Chinese herbal medicine as a preventive measure. Some schools go as far as adjusting the way class is conducted.

Beijing Normal University hands out thermometers to students and assigns medical staff to register their daily temperatures. The university also holds lectures on effective preventive measures.

The Ministry of Education requires schools to report their work in the prevention and control of SARS. This includes the full immediate disclosure of all cases.
