Premier Wen Jiabao says a responsible government should make the well-being of its people a top priority. The Chinese premier made the statement Friday during a special fact-finding tour in Beijing in the wake of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS outbreak in China.
The Chinese premier also announced that the central government has dispatched several task forces to uncover possible cases in which SARS cases have been mishandled or gone unreported.
The premier on Friday toured several Beijing schools and kindergartens for some first hand inspection to make sure adequate SARS prevention measures are in place at the Chinese schooling facilities.
His visit is among several high-profile visits by top leaders to show solidarity and determination to fight the deadly virus. Wen Jiabao urges school authorities to do their utmost to keep the disease away from schools.
He also urges them to give special attention to the well-being of foreign teachers and students in the country.
The premier also called on governments at all levels for all-out efforts to fight SARS, and to work hard for the well-being of local people. Specifically he urged all government agencies to do their best to facilitate the timely diagnosis and reporting of SARS cases.
He also warned that those who have failed to report the cases or tried to cover up would be held responsible.
Later, at the primary school affiliated with the prestigious Peking University, Wen Jiabao held a discussion session with foreign teachers over the SARS situation and their work and life in China.
