A World Health Organization medical team wrapped-up their four-day inspection in Beijing after visiting nine hospitals and health care centers treating SARS patients, including military hospitals. The team gave recommendations to Chinese officials on how to prevent and fight SARS.

The WHO experts said health care standards displayed at the visited hospitals are excellent, but they also put forward a number of recommendations.

Dr. Alan Schnur, member of WHO Medical Team, said: "The surveillance system is starting. It is excellent, but needs to be improved."

The experts also called for the Chinese government to invest more money into the health care sector to cope with the contagion. So far, SARS in China has largely been confined to urban areas. The experts recommended better preparedness by the government should a case occur in a rural area where the health care system is less developed.

Dr. Henk Bekedam, WHO Medical Team member said: "One of the thing we have recommended, and the government is looking into, is how to help the poor cope with the situation"

The disease has aroused great concern among Chinese leadership, who have promised to devote funding and the best human resources to fight the disease.

The experts also confirmed that the diseases' infectiousness reduces as it is passed on. But the experts say greater research needs to be done to pin down the exact cause and effective treatment of the disease. They say the fight against SARS will be a long and tough one.
