China is in the middle of a tough fight against the killer disease SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. While doctors and scientists dig for efficient remedies, comprehensive measures are being taken nationwide to control and prevent the spread of the disease.

In North China's Shanxi province, the local government has designated three hospitals in its capital city Taiyuan to specialize in treating SARS patients, and allocated funds to find a cure.

More than a hundred monitoring stations have been set up in the east China city of Shanghai.

And in south China's Guangdong Province, combination treatments of Chinese herbal and western medicines have seen encouraging results.

Dr Lin Lin from Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Guangdong said: "Some patients have strong symptoms in indigestion, like vomiting. Herbal medicines work well to stop this, and quickly reduce the concentration."

Intense prevention and control efforts are being seen in the nationwide transport system. Guangdong Railways have pumped in 1.5 million yuan to buy sterilizing and medical emergency equipment. Knowledge on how to prevent SARS is being broadcast to passengers all day.

At Beijing Capital International Airport, waiting rooms are being sterilized and ventilation devices put in place. The whole airport is on the alert for any passenger who shows symptoms of fever and coughing, and a medical observation room has been opened.

Similar measures have also been found in other major cities like Chongqing and Shenyang. Transport crewmembers and passengers said they felt comfortable and safe in a quarantined environment.
