"Ever since the outbreak of SARS in parts of Guangdong, the Communist Party and the State Council have been gravely concerned. While we are deeply saddened by the serious threat to people's lives, we are relieved to see the medical workers have done their best to help the patients recover," said Hu Jintao.

On behalf of the government, Hu Jintao expressed his thanks to the provincial officials and medical workers for their unstinting efforts to bring the disease under effective control.

He said such efforts should continue to help patients recover as soon as possible. He also said disease monitoring and prevention should be strengthened to prevent the spread and relapse of SARS.
