Since the first SARS case turned up in Beijing in March, medical workers in the capital city have been making great efforts to combat the spread of the disease. And public transportation has been improved to create a safe environment for the local residents.
You'an Hospital, a specialized hospital well-known for its effective treatment of contagious diseases, has set up a special area and established sterilization and isolation measures for SARS patients. A medical panel has been formed and training provided to relevant medical workers.
The doctors and nurses in other hospitals in Beijing are also fully dedicated to their jobs though it is very time-consuming and the workload is heavy. They are making every effort to keep the virus under control.
Many Beijing citizens are concerned that they might catch SARS if they go to hospitals, and therefore they'd rather stay at home even if they become sick. Experts have provided solid information to help dispel such ideas.
Wang Chen, president of Chao Yang Hospital said: "Hospitals are not places where SARS is born and spread. Actually, not even one SARS case has originated here. What's more, we have taken active measures to deal with the disease. Any patients who are suspected of having SARS would be entirely isolated."
Meanwhile, people working for the urban public transportation system have taken action to help inform people about SARS. They have put up at least a thousand posters at bus-stops and subway stations, and on the vehicles themselves, providing useful information about the virus.
All floors, seats and rails on public vehicles are also being disinfected and air conditioning systems have been turned on to guarantee good ventilation. Similar hygiene routines have been applied to taxies.
