Moving to calm fears that its residents are spreading SARS, The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said on Friday it would bar anyone exposed to the illness from leaving the city.

To promote cooperation in the campaign against SARS, a three-member Hong Kong delegation arrived in Guangzhou, capital city of China's Guangdong Province, on Thursday for a meeting with mainland experts and officials. The two sides exchanged ideas on a variety of issues including investigation, disease prevention, searching for the epidemic source and clinical treatment.

Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa announced in a news briefing on Friday that new measures will be enforced. He said that the government is concerned about some countries taking unfavorable actions against Hong Kong because of their worries about the situation there.

He said, "Therefore, I have decided to bar people having close contact with severe SARS patients from leaving Hong Kong during the quarantine period with effect from next Monday."

He said that checks would be made at land and seaports in a bid to further prevent those likely to be infected to leave Hong Kong.

The move followed an announcement on Thursday that a German airline was tracking down crew members and passengers who traveled with a man now hospitalized in Hong Kong with SARS. The man flew from Hong Kong to Munich on March 31.

On Friday, new figures issued by Hong Kong health officials brought the death toll in Hong Kong to 32 and the total number of people infected to 1,059.
