SARS database keeps authorities updated

As a measure to contain the deadly SARS virus, the southern Chinese province of Guangdong has set up a database for SARS patients to keep disease control agencies updated on the trends and patterns of the epidemic. .

As a hospital specializing in treating SARS patients, Guangzhou Number Eight People's Hospital has admitted the most patients struck by the potentially fatal illness in Guangzhou.

Among other things, medical staff at the hospital are required to report new cases to the municipal disease prevention and control center each day for analysis and decision-making.

Since the reporting procedures were put in place late in January, the Guangdong SARS database has been extended to contain files of all patients, including how they get infected and who they have contacted. These efforts have gained international recognition in the fight against the disease.

Wang Ming, vice-director of Guangzhou Disease Prevention and Control Centre, said: "During their fact-finding tour, WHO officials checked the original data and files and compared those records to the database that we set up. They think our database is accurate and authoritative."

Because of the database, authorities can quickly track down how the disease is spreading in some areas and medical staff can act swiftly to take measures, such as patient isolation, disinfection and ventilation.

Due to these efforts, several hospitals in Guangzhou including the Guangdong People's Hospital have reported no infection amongst medical workers.
