The WHO consultant team who have stayed in China's southern Guangdong Province for the past week investigating SARS have declared the disease to be under control in the province.
Since Guangdong Province is at present the largest and oldest known outbreak of SARS, the WHO consultants was charged to assess the local situation and to support the strengthening of surveillance, clinical management, infection control, and laboratory evaluation of SARS cases. After their 6-day investigation, the experts said SARS is under control in the province despite rumors which indicate the spread of the disease.
Dr. James H. Maguire, epidemiologist from WHO said: "Epidemically, control [for disease] decreases in the number. Not necessarily mean being eliminated."
Though the cause of the outbreak of SARS is still unknown, experts said Guangdong has developed a protocol for treating SARS-infected patients. The experiences of the province in preventing the disease from spreading should be recommended to other SARS-infected zones, such as measures for community infection control, patient management and hospital infection control.
The WHO consultants said SARS is still a disease acting in a new surprising and worrying way. But they are optimistic that from the data they've already got and the valuable experience they've learnt from Guangdong, the disease can be put under control within the globe.
