Atypical pneumonia-related deaths on Chinese mainland rise to 53

    The Chinese Ministry of Health has announced that the number of SARS related deaths on the Chinese mainland now reached to 53 and the total cases of atypical pneumonia have risen to 1,268.

    The ministry posted a press release on their website on Monday indicating that south China's Guangdong Province has so far reported 1,203 cases and 43 deaths. Yet it also says that general infection cases "are decreasing slowly." Meanwhile, Beijing has reported 19 cases with four deaths. According to the Chinese Ministry of Health, all cases are "imported" except those in Guangdong. So far, the rate of infection among medical workers has dropped to 25 percent from the previous 33 percent.
